Course Description:

Our Step-Up course is designed to prepare students in High Beginner to Mid-Intermediate Levels for core RCIIS programs and the life they will encounter while living in Toronto. The focus will be on improving English communication and understanding which will enable lower level students to be prepared for our Power Speaking program and subsequently Business Communication.

Course Overview:

The Step-Up course develops listening, speaking, reading, writing and grammar skills. All skills will be integrated into daily lessons with an emphasis on communicating clearly and confidently.

Course Objectives:

• Improve speaking skills via group conversation activities, oral responses to teacher-lead discussions and short presentations given on current events.
• Learn about proper sentence and paragraph structures while making sure that grammar skills improve constantly
• Improve listening skills through audio exercises and conversational activities
• Enhance reading and comprehension skills by using authentic news articles, short passages and short biographies on famous people
• Develop writing skills through exercises that focus on short descriptions, letters and paragraphs expressing opinions and ideas about relevant topics

Learning Outcomes:

Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

• Speak and express themselves with more confidence and clarity which prepares them for Power Speaking classes and the business meetings held in our Business Communication course
• Comprehend more meaning and vocabulary in texts and articles in local printed media
• Communicate with increased precision and conciseness when writing as well as compose short passages on various topics
• Understand how to use powerful grammar skills more efficiently when communicating and how these skills enhance and improve English communication
